    Why do being up for something and down for something mean the same thing?

    do they? i can see them having slightly different meanings, depending on what the issue is.

    I feel they can convey different attitudes, but basically both mean agreeing to something.

    Actually thinking about it, the reason is probably because both 'up' and 'down' don't actually have anything to do with what the phrases mean.
